Bridge piling is a word. Typically on land, columns between bridge spans are called “bents” but for a bridge over water they are called pilings or piles. The term comes from what they are sitting on for a foundation. More often than with a bridge on land, you have to use actual piles (can be thought of giant pieces of steel tubing) and drive them into the bottom of the river, lake or whatever water body to get through the soft sediment and anchor them into the bedrock so that they have something solid to sit on.
